This seminar invites students to examine the city of Miami Beach in terms of its urbanism, ecology, economy and sustainability. Students will use a range of analytical methods to explore the city and its architecture and public spaces. We will use the city as a laboratory in which we will develop site-specific models of site analysis. We will engage the city through its popular representation and review material and visual culture representations of the city through materials conserved at the Wolfsonian (where we will hold one class session).
Students will hone their ability to draw and write critically. Assignments will include a number of drawing, modeling and writing exercises through which students will analyze and interpret major urban spaces in Miami Beach and its architecture. These exercises and accompanying readings will be discussed weekly in a seminar format at FIU’s new Miami Beach Urban Studio.
All readings are available online as PDF files.
